How Long Do Seamless Gutters Last?

One of the most common questions we get is simply, "how long will this actually last?" The honest answer is that it depends less on the gutter material and more on how it was installed.

Material Lifespan

Aluminum, the most common gutter material, generally holds up for 20 to 30 years or more when properly installed and maintained. Steel gutters can last a similar amount of time but are more prone to rust over the decades. Copper is the longest lasting option, often exceeding 50 years, but comes at a significantly higher cost.

Installation Matters More Than Material

A seamless gutter with double-sealed corners, correct pitch, and properly spaced hangers will consistently outlast a gutter made from better material but installed carelessly. Most of the "my gutters failed early" stories we hear trace back to a corner that was never sealed properly or hangers spaced too far apart to handle snow load.

What Shortens a Gutter's Life

Neglected cleaning is the biggest factor within a homeowner's control. A gutter clogged with debris holds standing water and organic material against the metal, which accelerates corrosion and adds weight the hangers were not designed to carry long-term. Twice yearly cleanings, or a leaf guard system if you have heavy tree cover, go a long way toward protecting your investment.
